Here's a fact that should change how you feel about lacing up: over long distances, in the heat, humans can out-last almost every animal alive. Not out-sprint. A squirrel would smoke you. But keep going, mile after mile, in the midday sun? We're freaks of nature at it. And there's a good chance we became human because of it.

We're bad sprinters and incredible distance movers. Put a human against a horse, a dog, or an antelope in a short race and we lose, badly. Almost every four-legged animal is faster than us over a sprint. But endurance is a completely different contest. The ability to run long distances using aerobic energy is rare in the animal world, and among primates it's basically unique to us. A handful of animals can go the distance, wild dogs, hyenas, horses. Then there's us. That's the club.

The wild part: we may have hunted this way. Here's the theory that makes this fun.

Before bows and spears, some scientists think early humans hunted by simply refusing to stop. You can't outrun a deer in a sprint. But a deer overheats fast, and it has to stop to cool down. So a human could keep jogging after it, steady and relentless, through the hottest part of the day, until the animal literally couldn't run anymore. This is called persistence hunting, and it's still practised by a few hunter-gatherer groups today.

Being honest here: this "why" is a strong, well-supported hypothesis, not settled fact. Scientists still argue about how big a role hunting really played. What's not in much doubt is the anatomy, and the anatomy is wild. Your body is covered in running gear you didn't ask for. Anthropologists Dennis Bramble and Daniel Lieberman laid out a long list of features that only make sense if our ancestors evolved to go the distance. A few of them:

You sweat, almost uniquely well. Most animals cool down by panting, which you can't do at a gallop. We cool by sweating across bare skin, so we can dump heat while still moving. This is our single biggest endurance superpower. A springy Achilles tendon and arched foot that store and return energy with every stride, like a built-in pogo stick. Walking doesn't need these. Running does. A big butt. Your gluteus maximus barely fires when you walk, but it switches on hard when you run, stabilising you with every step. A special neck ligament that keeps your head steady while everything else is bouncing. Apes don't have it. Sprint-focused animals don't need it. Distance movers do.

None of this was designed for sitting. Every one of these traits is answering a question the couch never asks. Moving isn't the hard, unnatural thing. Sitting still is the weird, modern thing. Why this matters for you, today. You don't have to care about persistence hunting or evolution to take the point:
